ATS for teens?

topic posted Wed, March 7, 2007 - 6:42 AM by  Ziah
My rec center has asked me to create a program for teens. They have not been very successful in creating programming for teens and have had many requests for belly dance. I think that ATS will be great at keeping their attention but would love any advice from people that have done a program like this. The rec center classes run on a 4 week session so I am worried about keeping them coming back each session and integrating new students (it will be awhile until I can have two levels of teen classes).

    Hi Ziah,

Not sure if this is helpful but I just had my first teen attend my Tribal Basics Level 1 class. She is 14, and came with her mom so I was not thinking about catering specifically to a teen audience and thus did really did not think about doing anything special for her until after class. She got bored and frustrated easily, and sat outside half the time. Mom had a great time.

Her mom and I managed to talk to her after class and she agreed to come back only after I gave her some one on one attention (which she really seemed to thrive on - at that age, if they are there and not sulking in their rooms trying to avoid all human contact, they really LOVE and need to be praised and the center of attention) and she is willing to come back, but I am not entirely sure how to be able to teach and encourage her as much as she might need and still give all the other students something enough attention as well.

Oh, and I realized this post may have sounded like I despise teenagers. That could be a true observation as my own daughter is 18 and was one of the sulking in her room type of teenagers at the age of 14. Fortunately she grew out of that stage :)

I have never had a teen-only classes, but have had many teens in my regular classes, and it was great. I actually have three or four teens in my Monday classes right now. I love having them learn this dance at their age--so empowering!
