I have not noticed that this always creates good dancers, sometimes just muscular ones. I am not excercise oriented (my students would say different) but what I mean is I don't do things outside dance to keep myself fit, I dance hard (at least 15 to 20 hours a week) and do a bit of yoga and pilates cleverly disguised as dance so I don't get bored and my students feel like they are learning dance, not coming to an exercise class.

How do other dance forms balance strength training with the actually teaching of dance...i.e. creativity, basic technique building, rhythm, safety? Is this a debate in other forms also?

Intensive Workshop with K.J. Holmes and New Year's Eve Jam ...

27 December–3 January
Improvisation: Performance as Exposure
Intensive Workshop
with
K.J. HOLMES
Improvisation: Performance as Exposure
The training of Contact Improvisation is a physical practice that includes increasing range of motion, awakening awareness and clarifying intention. We learn through kinetic feedback with another as well as through exploring different patterns of movement and how all of our senses lead us into dancing. Touch is not enough. Preparing to perform requires more than awareness, it asks us to be seen and to see. In this workshop, we will focus on meeting truthfully and directly the unexpected. Contact Improvisation will be our entrance into the physicality of our images and applications of Body Mind Centering (r) will fine tune us to the mechanics of our instruments - our bodies. Weight, mass and breath become movement, become landscape, become story, become question, become idea. We will play with heightening our senses and perceptions, amplifying our awareness to expose more of our interior, making the invisible visible to play with time and space. Witnessing, reading, writing and the voice will be used to further engage and enliven our imaginations and for discovering new challenges and risks. How do we ready ourselves for performing and who is the being in the body? The workshop is accompanied by live music of Italian guest musician Roberto Bellatalla (double bass and other).

K.J. Holmes is an independent dance artist based in Brooklyn NY who has been exploring improvisation as process and performance since 1981. She teaches, choreographs and performs at festivals, universities and venues throughout the world, as a soloist and in her collaborations with artists such as Simone Forti, Image Lab (Lisa Nelson, Karen Nelson and Scott Smith) and in the work of Steve Paxton. Her influences include Contact Improvisation, Body-Mind Centering (r), Yoga (certified teacher 2007), Authentic movement, Ideokinesis, Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques, Martial Dance, world vocal studies and contemporary dance and theater. A 1999 graduate of the School for Body-Mind Centering, K.J. is adjunct faculty at New York University Experimental Theater Wing/ongoing teacher Movement Research NYC/has a private practice in Dynamic Alignment and Re-integration/and is currently studying Sanford Meisner acting technique at the William Esper Studio in NYC as well as developing an evening length piece entitled This is where we are (or take arms against a sea of troubles) which looks at where the body and language meet.

Dear dance teachers and leaders,

I co-host a thriving sunday midday free style community dance in Berkeley, California. The dance promotes free expression, community, and personal growth. With minimal structure, 20-40 people of all ages (children too) dance in a skylight-lit community music and dance center.

Even among our "regulars," I've sometimes heard about fears, inhibitions, feelings of being "awkward" or "a bad dancer," and discomfort in dancing "with" others. And, of course, sometimes newcomers have these feelings and never come back because of them.

I plan a special session of our dance devoted to "dancing in the daylight in total comfort," and I'd also like to incorporate some new traditions in our dance to foster comfort and reduce inhibitions.

So I'm seeking your advice and interesting insights:

What is the single most effective thing you do that puts people at ease?

If you're a dancer who is or was inhibited, what helps you or helped you the most?

Contact Camp has been a fixture on the playa for the past three years, and we're bringing it back in style for 2008. We've got some new infrastructure, a distributed leadership team, and a new on-line registration system. We plan to better coordinate work party participation and work shift participation prior to the event so that we're not spending valuable time on the playa figuring it all out.

Camp CONTACT will host 80-100 Contact Improvisators for the ten days spanning Saturday, August 23rd to Monday, Sept 1st. We'll start off by building a kitchen, a common area and the dance spaces. We'll also have shade structures to keep your tent cool, with the possibility of other amenities. We come to the playa to offer the gift of Contact Improvisation. Mornings, we'll be able to jam in Burning Man's Center Camp; afternoons, we can teach or take beginners and advanced classes. Each evening we will share in community meals and then glow in all that Black Rock City has to offer at night, including some of our own jams.

If you're into Contact, and up for the adventure of a lifetime, check us out! If you've camped with us before, we welcome you back.

You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

The festival will go on until June 29th: sixteen guest artists from various countries will animate the city from early morning to late at night, taking turns in a dense calendar of jams, performances and concerts, intensive workshops, encounters and laboratories centered around the theme of Contact Improvisation, improvisation dance and the performing arts.
Zipfest is a lively kermis with internationally famous guest artists invited to the Umbrian residence from various countries to collaborate in the creative production of events, promoting the identification of a trans-cultural art. The festival is an event of art and culture speaking the language of today, questioning itself on the processes or artistic interaction, creating contacts and occasions for cooperation among the guest artists, who bare their experience, affinities and cultural and generational differences in Orvieto, to create the festival together.

International scene 2008
Nita Little (www.nitalittle. com), American pioneer of Contact Improvisation, an internationally acclaimed artist, invited to Italy for the first time in April in the residenza dinamica of Palazzo Caravajal, for the project Restless Peace, and once more present in June as part of the Zipfest guest artists. Keith Hennessy, a Canadian performer with countless awards, for the first time in Italy, will present an interesting workshop in which improvisation dance, performance and shamanism will be put in relation to each other. Giorgio Convertito, an eclectic Italian dancer who has been living in Helsinki for six years, and is today an artist on the Finnish scene, Jacky Miredin the virtuoso French performer previously invited to Zipfest07 and the young Italian choreographer Sara Simeoni, currently dancing with Carolyn Carlson. The artistic director of the festival, Rossella Fiumi, takes part with her installation titled I'm All Ears, a forum on the theme of listening and communication in contemporary creativity.Jens Biedermann, a Swiss acrobatic dancer and accordion player, Adalisa Menghini, Italian choreographer who has been living in Berlin for years, Alessia Scala a young Neapolitan dancer, Isabelle Uski, Contact improviser from Grenoble, Gionatan Surrenti Italian dancer, improvisor and pedagogue, previously invited to several Zipfest editions, Yanaël Plumet French performer and traveler currently living in Istanbul, the musician and performer Michele Rabbia virtuoso percussionist invited to the preceding editions of the festival and particularly beloved by the Zip public, Marko Timlin Finnish sound artist proposing new modes in the field of electronic sound, composing and improvising on solar panels and Barnaby O'Rorke Tree, a versatile Scotch performer, improviser-cellist, composer and vocalist.

24-28 June Performances, concerts, forum
One of the most eagerly awaited events in Zipfest calendar, the improvisation performances: instant compositions, proposed then and here by the guest artists, in a type of performance called Real Time Composition.

Heart-felt curves
It is a great honor to present and pay homage to Luigi Mario, known also as Engaku Taino, a Zen master who has been living in the hinterland of Orvieto for many years. He is a fascinating figure with proficiencies and preparation of alpine skiing and rock climbing, as well as a Tai Chi Chuan guru, but above all a person to meet and know to practice meditation. Luigi Mario has been invited to the festival for two reasons: the first is to lead, aided by assistants, a free climbing session on the rocks of Ferentillo, a splendid zone in Umbria-Valnerina, on June 23rd. It is a unique occasion for those who practice Contact as well as others, because it gives one a chance to find out what it's like trying one's hand at a height of 30 meters, using one's strength, resistance, balance, gravity, weight, feeling of the void, and any number of other emotions to explore. The second reason is purely contemplative: three meetings of Tai Chi Chuan and meditation.

I think that ATS will be great at keeping their attention but would love any advice from people that have done a program like this. The rec center classes run on a 4 week session so I am worried about keeping them coming back each session and integrating new students (it will be awhile until I can have two levels of teen classes).

After the end of the workshop, on May 3rd and 4th, the association will plan also two days with the International Springfest Jam.

The intensive workshop and the Jam will be held both at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli, in Orvieto.

Application for registration in the project with Nita Little is open from January 7th. For information and more details write to: info@contactfestival.it, or telephone to +39 0763.341479.

Nita Little
Restless Peace
The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.
Honor peace.

about Nita Little
www.nitalittle.com
Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany, the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!
Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.

PLEASE FORWARD TO THE DIRECTOR OF YOUR DANCE SCHOOL, COMPANY OR DANCE DEPARTMENT

Carole Valleskey, former principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, founder and director of the California Dance Institute, an in-school program for low income children, would like to offer to your dance department, school or company a Master Class in the Teaching Techniques of Jacques d’Amboise’s world-renowned National Dance Institute. Workshops given in Los Angeles will run approximately $300. We can negotiate a cost with you if you wish to tailor a longer program for your students or if the travel time is longer than a normal drive around L.A.

California Dance Institute is the newest affiliate of the National Dance Institute (NDI). NDI was founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques d'Amboise in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence. Many people know of the program through the 1983 Academy Award-winning film “He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin’.” Established in 2000, and adhering to the NDI philosophy and methodology, CDI has been working to critical acclaim with thousands of children throughout Los Angeles.

In this innovative Master Class format, students participate in movement classes similar to those taught to children in the CDI program, and are thereby introduced to the extraordinary pedagogy that has won the program such acclaim. The fast paced, high energy, performance-oriented teaching style creates an electric atmosphere for learning. Live pianists accompany all classes.

Following the 50-minute movement session, CDI Director Carole Valleskey engages in Q&A with the students. This is a dynamite opportunity for dance students to assess not only movement skills but also the educational and social goals that CDI pursues for K-12 children via in-school and after-school programs. For dance students who hope or expect to teach dance themselves at some point in their careers, the CDI master class is especially valuable for helping them imagine how skills and goals differ depending on the age groups and cultural groups that they might encounter in their own teaching.

The gains are not limited to dance major students: education majors and other students who enjoy moving as part of their day-to-day experience will be easily able to participate in the Master Class. In addition, if desired, the Q & A portion of the Master Class can include information on how to start a nonprofit organization, and participants interested in pursuing an internship with CDI can speak directly with Valleskey at the close of the class.

Please contact Carole at CValleskey@earthlink.net or Elaine Sokoloff at 323 301-8900 if you are interested in this unique opportunity. A syllabus for the class can be mailed or emailed to you by emailing Elaine Sokoloff with your mailing or emailing address. Her email is: ElaineAS@aol.com For references, you may contact Linda Tomko at UC Riverside: linda.tomko@ucr.edu

The 25-year-old NDI program has won educators' hearts worldwide because it delivers consistent, structured arts activities by professional artists who are trained in a clear teaching methodology that achieves results. You may have seen the NDI program featured in the PBS special, "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'", which won an Academy Award in 1983.

Directed by former Joffrey Ballet principal dancer, Carole Valleskey, the CDI program consists of weekly dance classes in the schools, prmarily for 3rd-6th grade students. Professional dancers trained in the NDI methodology teach each class, accompanied by a live musician. The focus is not on any particular technique, but on achieving mastery, discipline, self-esteem, and learning the value of teamwork and standards of excellence. The culmination of the 30-week program is a professionally staged performance in which the children display their accomplishments to their families, teachers, schoolmates and the public.

Actually she's looking for a "master", someone who can give her more than dance steps....I've read a lot of schedule from dance studios in NY, but I see a lot of "Adv beg" or "int"...do you know any classes that could be a real challenge for a professional dancer??? I went to the chiropractor and talked to him and he gave me some back stretches. Only some work for me and others don't. It is getting the point that I am having a hard time dancing and that is certainly not a good thing being a teacher and performer! Please let me know if you have any good back stretches for me!
Alrighty, everyone whose met me or checked out either of my pages (here on Tribes and on MySpace) knows how addicted to belly dance I've become. And also, it's no secret that (like many other dancers) I've considered opening my own studio - eventually.

Well, eventually is turning out to be NOW!
I've been crazy mad trying to get all the details and loose ends taken care of. Have gotten quite a lot done preparing to open (two inter-related) businesses. The first is the boutique side of things - and Funky Temple will be open for biz (prob) by end of July.
The studio side of the biz is where things are going ever sooo s l o w.

The male partner usually wears a striped shirt and may wear a beret. The female partner wears a tight dress. It looks like a tango only the partners appear to fight. The man may slap the woman to the ground where she collapses. He or she may drag a chair around behind them on the stage. Sometimes one partner may even smoke during this dance! I remember seeing it parodied in cartoons as a young girl. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I have a student who would like to recreate one of these performances but I don't know how to learn more about it. The only thing I've been able to find online that's even close is this:
Here is a great article about it on the Gilded Serpent website www.gildedserpent.com/art32/n...ates.htm
(I think is important enough to get the word out about this - and so am posting this message on most of the tribe I belong to)
Does anyone feel like $200 is to low for a standard cost - or to high??
My personal opinion is that if you are willing to work for less, then it DEFINATLY hurts the industry as a whole - because sometimes it is about price... and if a qualifed/professional dancer has to lower rates just to get work, then new & less experienced dancers take even still less - then eventually nobody can afford to work at their art.
international practical seminar
under the guidance of Sergey Ostrenko

There is a great number of techniques which an actor, dancer or choreographer can use to form his own way of everyday individual training. “To make difficult habitual, habitual - easy, easy - beautiful”, this is the greatest inspiration from Stanislavsky and the mastery of a performer in self-improvement.

The most part of the seminar consists of practical training which develops in open creative atmosphere. Participants will gain hundreds of interesting ideas and effective devices for practical work on the stage, starting from methods of individual training to creation of a performance in creative group. This is an excellent chance to investigate possibilities and to reconsider stereotyped views!

I posted for the first time the other day about becoming a DMT. I've looked into taking course to earn an Associates Degree in Dance at local community colleges and now must aske the inevitable. Just how old is too old to start dancing or a career in dance. I don't expaect to dance in music videos, I hope to teach various folk or social dances and some type of expressive movement or dance therapy for at-risk youth.

I don't think 32 (I'll be turning 32 later this month) is over the hill, but while I'm on the topic are there other 30-somethings here? Do you encounter ageism when you look for work. I'm going to take classes regardless, but this is a concern.

Thank you

Soma Olam (www.somaolam.com), a performance art company based in San Francisco, is looking for 1 female and 1 male performer to fill 2 paid positions starting immediately and continuing through the fall (potentially indefinitely). Pay rate is $250/month with 2 rehearsals (4 hour and 3 hour) per week. We are currently featuring a show called "The Tears of Jelal" and will be touring briefly in late June and early July on the west coast as well as performing at a few west coast festivals in Aug and Sept. We are currently working on new material for the show and are looking for people skilled in dance (modern, contemporary, butoh, ballet, hip hop, etc), capoeira, acrobatics, contact improv, prop manipulation, and aerial dance. All of these skills are a plus and, of course, all are not expected. We are currently in residence at Xenodrome Performance Space located @ 1320 Potrero Ave, San Francisco (in the Mission).

Please message me directly, RA (Rob Dixon), Artistic Director, with any questions or to set up an audition. Please contact soon since these positions may fill up quickly. Visit our web site: www.somaolam.com

Soma Olam offers a unique, "impressionist" style of physical theater. A multimedia performance troupe, we set out to create and explore emotional landscapes through visuals, soundscapes, and performative elements. These elements include aerial arts, stilting, dance, acro-balancing, multi-media projection, abstract lighting, elaborate set design, and special effects.
At the confluence of the personal and the universal, these performance journeys are multi-sensory and participatory. We feel that through the window of the microcosm of human relation, we glimpse into the grander archetypes that govern our world and universe. Since our work uses only sparse language and occasional spoken word, it is not bound by language barriers, therefor keeping open the possibility of touring internationally.

"The Tears of Jelal"

"The heart... is made alive by (one) who gives an outlet to intense feelings.
By so doing the clouds of jelal, the power which gathers with psychic development,
fall in tears as drops of rain,
and the sky of (the) heart is clear,
allowing the soul to shine."
Hazrat Inayat Khan

Join us on a journey into the collective consciousness of humanity. "TEARS OF JELAL..." the story of where we are now, how we got here, and most of all, what it will take to release what we are clinging to and move forward with grace.

Currently a 35 minute performance, Soma Olam sets out to tell an epic tale exploring humanity's experience of love, loss, separation, forgiveness and release. It follows two characters, their guides, and the people of earth on their journey from creation to birth; from connection to separation; from light into shadow; and from shadow into... the unknown. This is a look into what it will take for humankind to evolve into a brighter, more promising future.

NIA in Venice with Saffire Feb. 10-20, 2007
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When living in Venice, Italy, my normal day included lots of walking, going up and down bridges, carrying grocery bags, and everything else without the use of a car. There are no cars in Venice. Built in the lagoon of the Adriatic, the streets are canals and walking is a necessity. Going about my daily life, I never tired of the ancient architecture and art and my appreciation grew by the day and by the year. Walking over the Rialto bridge, through piazza San Marco, or down any anonymous calle, can provoke an awareness of the history of the city, making the very atmosphere palpable. Charles Dickens described Venice as a “ghostly city” and Oscar Wilde said riding in a gondola is like floating in an open coffin in a sewer! Nevertheless, the charisma of Venice is so strong it overcomes this darker aspect. It is alluring, sensual, and strikingly beautiful.

Venice may sometimes be associated with decadence and death, but is the most lively and vibrant town that one can imagine. I remember the sun light on water churned by the oars of gondolas that reflected on the frescoed ceiling of my salotto . The painted angels seemed to dance as their robes fluttered in the vibrant light. The otherworldly charm is most evident during carnival time when life becomes a perpetual masquerade party full of mirth and shameless delights.

After 32 years of Venice, I now live in Portland, OR where I succumbed to the car for transportation until my legs and entire body protested their less important role in my life. My body no longer felt at one with my spirit or harmonious with the space around me but more like a mind in a body that began to be heavy and lethargic, needy of a machine to transport it. I began to lose the pleasure of movement. I felt and saw the difference in my body and soul. Luckily I discovered NIA and an excellent instructor, Saffire Bouchellon. Just after a few weeks I feel my muscles regaining their tone and a more positive energy flowing through me recalling the strong rhythm of life that I had in Venice.

Suddenly I got the idea of NIA in Venice. If one can “gather the energy” as Saffire says, in a stark studio in Portland, think of what energy one can gather in the timeless beauty of Venice, among Renaissance art and architecture, misty canals, and Vivaldi’s compositions still resonating across the stones. When I proposed this idea to Saffire his reaction was so instant and enthusiastic that I immediately began to organize the trip based on my knowledge and contacts in Venice. We chose carnival time to transform and enhance ones own identity, and to dance in and out of palaces and the spirits of historical personages. So, don’t forget to bring a costume!

This unique experience will include lodging in a remodeled watch factory on the Giudecca, breakfasts, 5 dinners, 5 lunches of genuine Venetian cuisine, visits to private artisans’ and artists’ studios, a classical concert and a New Orleans Gypsy jazz concert, 7 NIA sessions with Saffire, a private visit to a maestro on Murano, private guide, translator, and boat transportation. Only $1,650.00 per person. (Does not include air fare.)

This introductory Axis class will propose safe AND athletic fall management patterns (moving architecture) as well as provide the guided opportunity to test them in a dynamic, rhythmic context...

Experience has shown me that a few things are really important to learn when we dance. They are: alignment for standing still and for moving, safe falling reflexes and rhythm. Studying alignment will give you a sense of safety, parameters inside of which you will conserve your strength and health while you study unfamiliar coordination. Safe falling reflexes will make the floor a friend instead of an enemy, encouraging you to release into the acceleration of the drop without fear. Allowing yourself to accelerate is the key to understanding and adapting your own size and shape to the chosen rhythm.

I believe that true freedom for individual expression and physical empowerment resides in the respect of nature’s gift, the evolution of a conscious, rather than a conceptual body.

I just joined today. I haven't had much time to read old post and no longer have a connection at home, so if you do reply it may take some doing on my part before I can get logged on again.

I currently work as a Massage Therapist, and have aspirations for becoming a Dance and Movement Therapist/Teacher. I was curious as to the educational background of DMTs. I have most of a Philosophy B.A. and intend on returning to school to complete a BA/BS in Kinesiotherapy or Exercise Physiology or maybe chuck all the science stuff and go for completing the Philosophy degree with a minor in Antropology (focusing on shamanism or cultural dance or something of the like). Everything is up in the air.

As a massage therapist my approach to DMT is to release emotional blockages using touch and movement. I had looked into programs at places like Naropa University in CO, and CIIS (CA Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco) however these routes require that I obtain a MFT which seems rather daunting as I haven't yet earned a B.A. I have no formal dance training beyond sporadic ballet/tap classes taken in my youth. Mainly I have a love for the release and healing that directed or conscious movement brings and I'd love to grow and/or share that with others.

If anyone has any info about courses of study or schools where I could learn the appropiate skills please let me know.

Thank you for your time

Due to strong interest, I have developed an intensive seminar on "Teaching Middle Eastern Dance." It is open to those currently teaching who would like to learn more approaches and have opportunities for feedback. It is also open to those who are thinking about teaching and need a foundation in dance education. The class is geared towards methods that can be incorporated into a number of Middle Eastern dance styles. Topics will cover kinesiological effectiveness of warm up, cold downs, and stretches, leaning style theory, cultural adaptation of movement instruction, and structuring creative movement exploration. Students will work on defining their personal philosophy of dance education and pedagogical style.

Classes will be held for 4 Sundays Oct 15, Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5
Classes are from 1 - 4pm.

17550 Burbank Blvd.
Suite P-1 (near White Oak).

For those who are interest in my teaching background here is a little history.

My first entry into teaching was while I worked on a B.A. in music education. During this time, I learned pedagogy and gained experience teaching string instruments to children and adults. As Middle Eastern dance became a priority in my life, I began applying techniques that I learned from music and ballet to my dance practice. Over ten years ago, I started teaching Middle Eastern dance studio classes. Since then I have taught beginners to professionals in traditional and experimental improvisations and choreographies. I also direct Ya Helewa! dance company. While attending graduate programs in dance at both UCLA and UCR, I took courses in dance pedagogy. These allowed me to continue developing my own method of teaching while gaining invaluable insights and feedback from dance educators such as Karen Clippenger, Judy Gantz-Siegel, Linda Tomko, and Sally Ness. At both institutes, I designed and taught accredited courses in Middle Eastern dance. I have also had the opportunity to teach in other universities for continuing adult education such as the Learning Tree and Golden Oaks. Currently, I am an instructor at Cal Poly, Pomona where I teach Belly Dance and World Dance courses.

If you plan on attending, please let me know ahead of time so I may send you material for the first meeting.

We finally shot the first run of my instructional Bellydance DVD yesterday! There is still some more shooting to do, then scoring the music and editing.... so still a ways to go til its ready, but we've finally gone from the pre-production stage to the production process! We were shooting all day until almost midnight, but I still managed to make it to the Grey Eagle and catch the last few songs by Soora Gameela (who you will love to dance to so check them out! http://www.myspace.com/sooragameela) which was a perfect relaxation and winding down from a long day. It was amazing to see how the process of what happens in studio converts to the screen and how challenging it was to simulate the natural flow and connection of teaching when there is no music filling the room or live students to connect with. But once I got going with my chakra spiral that center point took care of the rest and it started to flow more easily. The folks at A Viewpoint Production gave me the deluxe tretament on setting up the lights for a few hours until they were superbly warm and inviting. It's very exciting to finally be manifesting this and I will be even more excited to get to announce when it is finally finished and available! Stay tuned for updates! ~Mizilca

I'm hoping someone has experience with dyeing/painting character shoes.

Mine are Capezios, black leather, and I'd like to convert them to something more suitable (color-wise) to outdoor cabaret bellydance performances. Another local dancer used something to strip the original dye from her Capezios, and then she spray-painted them metallic gold; however her original shoes were nude/taupe in color where mine are black. I haven't had much luck in finding a local source for the dye stripper she used.....she modified her shoes about 6 years ago, and the store she purchased the dye stripper from has closed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks and Shimmies,
Amina in Mpls.
